Free The Children is an international charity and educational partner that believes in a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. Proudly Canadian, Free the Children was founded in 1995 by then 12 year old Craig Kielburger. Its innovative education and development programs involve more than 1.7 million youth, empowering them to remove barriers that prevent them from being active local and global citizens.

Internationally, Free The Children’s award-winning holistic and sustainable development model, Adopt a Village, has brought more than 650 schools and school rooms to 55,000 children in need every day – children who otherwise would not have the chance to go to school.

Free The Children has also provided clean water, sanitation, health care, sources of alternative income and food security to hundreds of thousands of people in developing communities. The model is designed to free children and their families from the cycle of poverty by meeting the basic needs of all members of a community and eliminating the obstacles preventing children from accessing education. Ultimately, this sustainable model provides families with the tools, training and resources that they need to lift themselves out of poverty.

Domestically, Free The Children works to educate, engage and empower young Canadians to become active, engaged global citizens in issues they care about. It’s innovative programming reaches 4,000 schools and 35,000 educators.

Free The Children’s annual signature event, “We Day”, brings together tens of thousands of youth and teachers with celebrities, musicians and heroes who share their inspirational stories. You can’t buy a ticket to We Day – students attend free of cost and in exchange, commit to taking one local and one global action throughout the year. More than a one day event, We Day is tied to a year-long program, which provides students and educators with curricular resources, campaigns and materials to help turn inspiration from the day into action.

The work and impact of Free The Children has been featured on Oprah, 60 Minutes, and CTV. On average, 90% of all funds donated go directly to support programming, with only 10% allocated towards administration – making Free The Children among the most cost-effective organizations in Canada focused on creating social change. Free The Children also has a strong board of directors, and its projects are regularly independently evaluated. The organization proudly produces measurable and quantifiable social impact, helping children both at home and abroad
