About

Obtaining a higher education is more difficult and costlier for students who have children to support. This financial disadvantage in turn affects the security and well-being of the student's children, even well after graduation. Sherry is no exception. She graduated in 2012 from post secondary studies with $48,000 in student loan debt. As a single mom of three, she works hard to support her family, but the majority of her wages are used to support her children, pay child care fees, and pay off her hefty student loan. As a result, she struggles to pay her kids' school fees, cannot afford any extra curricular programs for her kids such sports or music programs, and cannot afford to start saving for their education. Unfortunately, there are no charities or programs to help graduates reduce their student loan debt once it is in repayment, and those who have children are especially affected. Sherry has been diligently making her student loan payments for 6 years, and without any assistance, it will take Sherry another 2-3 years to pay off her student loan. Thanks to Aeroplan and the HigherEd Points program, Aeroplan miles may be used to send a payment directly to her Alberta student loan account. 33,750 Aeroplan Miles is needed to make a $250 contribution to her loan account.
