About

Since its founding in 1960, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada has emerged as the country’s preeminent professional orchestral and chamber music training institute. Each year, 100 gifted young artists aged 16 to 28 attend a free summer training institute taught by prestigious faculty, under the baton of a world-renowned conductor. Competition for a place in the Orchestra is extremely fierce, and only the best and most promising applicants win a place. Following this gruelling selection process, the entire Orchestra comes together at a residential 8-week intensive training institute, preparing a world-class repertoire, which they then tour nationally and internationally during July and August. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young Canadian musicians to make their mark and launch national and international careers.
Today, there are more than 3,000 NYO alumni worldwide, and more than 40 per cent of Canada’s professional orchestra players are NYO alumni.

In 2017, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada will embark on the most historic milestone event in its history. As our nation celebrates the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the National Youth Orchestra has been hand-picked – as one of a select group of just 40 carefully chosen organizations – to design, lead, and execute one of the most prestigious and high-profile signature events in the sesquicentennial.
During July and August 2017, we will mount a magnificent, high-visibility pan-Canadian tour – the Edges of Canada Tour - which will see specially-commissioned works performed in Canadian cities coast to coast to coast, with stops in Montreal, Toronto, Waterloo, Stratford, Halifax, Charlottetown, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Nanaimo, Whitehorse, and Vancouver. All concerts will be free, and there will be involvement of all Canadians through pre-concert panel discussions, involvement of schools and community groups, and an extensive social media and webcasting program. A documentary film will intimately capture the process of the whole artistic conversation, beginning with auditions, through rehearsals, and into the final performances.
NYO and its visionary supporters will raise the bar, increase the profile, build Canadian cultural literacy, and step into the spotlight as partners building the future of Canada. With your support, we will deliver something never before seen, while providing the next generation of great young artists an opportunity of a lifetime.

Aeroplan Miles are essential for the success of NYO Canada. Our faculty and staff come from all over Canada and Aeroplan Miles help them travel to the training session and back to their homes after tour. As a charitable organization, NYO Canada relies on Aeroplan Miles to retain its status as a National organization, and enables us to conduct our business across the country without financial constraints.

Donate your Aeroplan Miles today to help us mount the most extensive and culturally-enriching tour in our history!
